First Assembly of God held their opening service in Sierra Vista on Sunday, October 5, 1958. Reverend Virgil L. and Greta Jones, who had recently moved to Arizona from California, were the founding pastors. Their services were held in the Community Center Building on Third street, just one block off of the old Bisbee Highway. Sierra Vista, located in the southern part of Arizona at the base of the Huachuca Mountains, is north of the Mexico border. Because of its close proximity to Fort Huachuca Military Reservation (Army Post), Sierra Vista has always been somewhat of a transit community.
The present Facilities begin with the new sanctuary and educational rooms in 1984… Additional education rooms in 1986… New Family life center in 1995… the Sanctuary was remodeled in 2012. First Assembly of God in Sierra Vista has continued to be strong and effective church in the Arizona District throughout the years. They have truly been a “good neighbor” to several churches within their own sectional boundaries which, from time to time, have needed monetary assistance–sometimes for even an extended period of time. They have also provided leadership to neighboring churches while they were without permanent pastoral leadership.
World Missions has always been a priority for First Assembly of God in Sierra Vista. For many years they have not fallen below the top eight givers within the Arizona District in their annual giving to World Missions, and most often in frequent years they are listed in the second or third position of the most outstanding contributors. Surely their willingness to give has been a contributing factor in the success of First Assembly of God in Sierra Vista…As has been seen many times over, God’s blessings are evident on those who will sacrifice in their giving so that the gospel message continues–at home and abroad.
